A witch’s altar serves as a sacred space for her practice. However, you don’t need to be involved in witchcraft to create one. But, what is an altar?

Tools of the Trade

A spiritual altar can serve multiple purposes for different types of energy work.
Think of it as a central symbol in witchcraft; it embodies the core of the practice.
However, you don’t need anything fancy to make one. A raised platform is fine.
On a witch’s altar, you’ll find items that symbolize the four elements: crystals, candles, sage, and water.
Additionally, this is where the correspondence for spells is going. These can be anything that means something to you and your craft.
It’s the place for energy, intention, and a connection to the divine. The arrangement and function of yours can differ significantly from mine.
It’s all based on the witch’s tradition, individual preferences, and spiritual journey.
Common Elements

An altar cloth is a fabric that may reflect the season, a specific intention, or an aesthetic.
Candles represent fire and illumination and are often used to set intentions or honor deities. This is also where you’ll light your spell candles.
Crystals can be used for their energetic properties to amplify intentions or balance energies.
You’ll also find some tools on an altar:
- athame – a ceremonial blade for directing energy
- chalice – represents water and the divine feminine
- wand – for directing energy
- cauldron – symbolizes transformation and the elements of water and fire
Where to get an Altar
First, it’s important to understand that you don’t have to have an extravagant space. Your altar can be a literal shelf.
Since an altar is usually just a raised platform, you can use a table, a tray, or a stool.
Alternatively, you can buy one or build one yourself.
