What is Smudging?

Burning sacred sage, herbs, incense, or palo santo to cleanse yourself, your space energetically, or objects is smudging.

This ritual is rooted in Indigenous cultures and is believed to cleanse and purify a person, space, or object of negative energy. It is often used as a spiritual purification practice, healing, and prayer.

It’s commonly performed by wafting the smoke over the body or around a room while setting intentions or reciting prayers. Try approaching the practice with respect and understanding because of its cultural significance.

When to Smudge

You can give anything a smoke bath at any time for different purposes. Here are some situations when you could smudge:

  • before energy work
  • for spiritual blessings
  • before a spell
  • to cleanse an object
  • after an illness
  • after a negative event
  • when you feel emotionally or spiritually drained
  • to change the mood in the room

Smudging is personal, so you can choose when it feels right.

Where to get a Smudge Stick

Sage smudging has long been used to connect to the spiritual realm and to enhance intuition. Burning sage is used to clear low vibes and solve spiritual dilemmas.

Sage is multi-purpose. For example, use it to cleanse, purify, and protect your home against negative energy.

Also, Palo Santo can protect and heal, plus more.

You can also use incense to give everything a good smoke bath cleansing.

How to Smudge

First, choose your smudge stick or incense and a heatproof dish. A natural abalone shell is often used in smudging rituals.

As always, set your intention. Consider what to purify and the energy to cleanse.

Create a pathway for the energy to move around. Open a window or door to allow any stagnant energy to flow out.

Start by lighting your smudge stick. Allow it to burn briefly, then blow out the flame.

If needed, gently blow the flame to make it stronger. Always hold the stick over a fireproof container to catch the hot ashes falling.

Now, waft the smoke around while going from room to room. Pay attention to areas that feel heavy or stagnant.

When finished, tap the smudge stick against a heat-resistant dish to extinguish the remaining embers. Be sure to extinguish the flame every time.

You can also use Palo Santo to smudge. Get creative and burn symbols or words on it with a wood burner first.

Remember, smudging is a personal practice. Trust your instincts and adopt a ritual to suit your preferences.
